According to Greek mythology, Atlas was condemned by Zeus to hold up the heavens for all eternity, as punishment for siding with the defeated Titans in the war against the Olympians. Zeus may or may not have realised that due to the folly of humanity Earth would start to get significantly hotter in the future. Scientists estimate that the surface temperature of the Earth could rise a further 6C by the year 2100, which as well as having disastrous consequences for life on the planet, may just make it too hot for Atlas to handle.
